Easyjet passenger avoids baggage fees by wearing everything
This crafty holiday goer managed to avoid paying additional airport baggage fees... by wearing the entire contents of his luggage onto the plane!
Image credit: JAD – Flickr.com We’ve all been there – spending hours squeezing your entire wardrobe into one bag to avoid checking in any luggage on your flight, only to be told it’s too big and you’re slapped with an extra £45 fee to have it put in the hold.
Easyjet passenger Matt Botten put his (seven sock-layered) foot down when he refused to pay the extra hold baggage fee on a recent trip to Reykjavik, Iceland. In protest of the additional baggage fee, he chose instead to wear the entire contents of his luggage.
Proud of his efforts, Boden then posted a pic of his accomplishment on Facebook, along with the status:
We’re going to Iceland, baby! And how to do it in a financially frugal manner, without having to stump up forty five bloody quid for a hold bag? Simply by wearing everything I own.
Our hats off to Matt – ten points for effort on the frugality tip, but we wonder if it was really all still worth it three hours later when he arrived in Iceland with sweat patches spread through every layer and no clean clothes to wear on holiday!
Some additional tips for saving at the airport:
- Don’t buy any drinks before you get through security. Seems like a no-brainer, but it still gets us every time!
- Don’t be fooled by ‘duty free’ claims in airport shops. Items are only duty free if you’re flying outside of the EU, so if you’re flying within the EU the chances are it won’t be a good deal.
- Don’t waste money buying miniature toiletries to keep within the 100ml hand luggage limit. These tiny bottles are really expensive – buy a collection of small refillable bottles instead and decant whatever you have in the house. Be sure to check they’re all still under 100ml though, or you risk losing them at security.
- Bring a packed lunch. Airport food is notoriously overpriced, as is the stuff they sell up in the air. Avoid paying through the nose by throwing together a quick packed lunch to bring with you. Sure, you might get a bit of a teasing from your mates, but who’s the one laughing when they’re forking out a tenner for a sandwich and a can of coke!
